Surface means the colors and patterns on the sculpture. You can think of the surface as paint.
The Surface is composed of many separate layered graphics, of three different types- Backgrounds, Skins, and Stickers. Stickers and Skins are described in the Stickers page of this website, for now, let's focus on the Background.
The Background wraps all the way around the sculpture, and is the image that everything else builds on. The Random button and the Paint Brushes directly affect the Background, not any other Stickers. (The Fill button and Filter will affect the Background or whatever Sticker is currently selected.)
You always have one and only one Background, and it is always the lowest item on the Sticker bar on the right edge of the screen. Touch and hold the Background to open a dialog where you can replace the Background with another image.

This button will toggle between seeing the surface as it will look on the shape, or seeing it unwrapped and flattened out like a Canvas. There is no editing in Canvas mode, but you can zoom and pan. Double tap the Canvas itself to toggle between seeing just the Background, or the whole Surface with all of the Stickers.

Touching the fill button will paint the Background, the selected area of the Background, or the currently selected Sticker in the the currently selected fill color. Touch and hold the fill button to bring up a screen where you can change the fill color and it's transparency. The Color Picker screen is explained on the Color page of this website.
This tool also has another function- The colors used by the Random icon to generate a new Background will lean towards the currently selected fill color. If it is more transparent, the Random will be more subtle and monochromatic, and if it is more opaque the Random will be more extreme. |
The next six buttons are your paintbrushes. You can tap one to select it for painting, or press and hold to bring up a dialog box to edit the color and size of the paintbrush. It paints in rings on the Background all the way around the sculpture. Stroke up and down to lightly tint an area, stroke left and right to build up color in a small area. Stroke repeatedly to build up the layers of paint.
