Sage is powerful yet simple. Each sculpture is composed of two aspects: It's Shape, and it's Surface.
This app makes Shapes that are sort of based on cylinders, where you can adjust the curvature of the sides- you alter it the same way you would by throwing a vase on a potter's wheel, or by carving wood on a lathe. The Surfaces have multiple layers called "Stickers". You can move, resize, and sort the stickers right on the 3D model without having to go to an external graphics program. |

The app has three modes- View, Shape, and Surface, as indicated by the three tabs near the top of the app's screen. Each mode has it's own Help page. In addition to the three tabs for changing the three modes, there are also some additional buttons on the top bar that are available in every mode.
Many buttons in this program will have three functions: tap to use a tool, double tap to use it automatically over the whole sculpture, and touch and hold to see a dialog box of properties specific to that tool. Check the tables at the bottom of each page to see the different actions for each kind of tap.

When you first launched this app, you were given a random sculpture. Touch the Random icon to get a new random sculpture. When you use this button in Shape mode, only the shape changes, the surface remains the same. In Surface mode, only the background surface changes, and the shape remains the same. In View mode, both will change.
The Random surfaces will either be geometric patterns generated by the app, or ones selected from the COLOURLovers.com website. |
The Selection tool lets you select a horizontal section of the sculpture to edit. It is available in both the Shape and Surface modes, but not the View mode. It works just like a marquee tool in most graphics programs, where you draw a rectangle with your finger to pick a part of the sculpture, except that the rectangle will always be symmetrical based on the center vertical axis.
Stroke with one finger to draw the rectangle. Once a rectangle is drawn, you can resize it by starting a stroke from above, below, left or right of the rectangle and moving in or out. Start a stroke from inside the rectangle to move it up or down, or make the rectangle wide or narrow without changing the height. If you start a stroke from any other location, you will select a new rectangle. Double tap the button to make the rectangle snap to the grid. The Shaping and Surface tools will be limited to the height of the selected area. The geometric shape tools will be limited to both the width and height. Touch and hold the Select button to bring up a dialog box where you can choose the size of the grid. |
